I realize I have waited FAR too long to blog again, but I just feel too busy to reiterate what I have already lived through hahaha. So I think I will just do video game reviews now...
I have realized my scores in my last review don't really give a good scale to judge off of how good it really is, so I am converting to good ole 10 point scale.
I beat Red Dead Redemption a while ago now, but I really wanted to write a review for it. This game is one of Rockstar's finest titles to date. It actually got video game of the year somewhere last year, and for good reason. This game is spectacular! In this game you play a man by the name of John Marston, a rough n' tough guy who is on a mission. Set in 1911, this 3rd person action adventure shooter, is a western like none other!
Story: 9/10
The story makes for a great western story! And as you progress through the game further, and unravel new things, it just makes you want to play more.
Sound: 10/10
Sound effects were great, and the voice acting was superb, particularly that of John Marston who was voiced by Rob Wiethoff. I LOVED the soundtrack, it was perfect. The soundtrack was absolutely beautiful and extremely well themed to the game itself.
Gameplay(10)/Controls(9): 18/20
The controls for the most part are extremely fluid, and very streamlined. It is easy to pick up and play. You feel like such a badass gunslinger in this game with how easy it is to pick off 10 people in a gang in a matter of seconds with just a revolver (of course you get loads of other guns to choose from too, and a lasso, and knife, etc.) Dead Eye, is a very neat system in which you slow down everything and pick targets to shoot, then you let go and shoot off all your bullets *BAM!* dead. There are several outfits you can get that give you different buffs which is very nice, and makes seeking out outfits to be looking different, not only rewarding to the eyes, but to the game itself. There are different random events that occur where you can save people, or catch a stolen horse, or kill some muggers etc. Which really immerses you into the western atmosphere. You also have a good/bad typical meter, where you can become Famous (good) or infamous (evil) both of which give you different perks. You can also become wanted by the cops, which is no where near as bad as in GTAIV. You can clear your name with just some money, and you can escape easily. There are tons and tons of side missions to do such as bounties where you can hogtie people, or kill them, then there are mini games such as poker, 5 finger filet, dice, arm wrestling, horse shoe throwing, darts, etc. Each of which you bet money in and either make money or lose money. (Poker is so effing ridiculously difficult.) This game's story will last you anywhere from 10-20 hours, and then up to 100 hours if you do EVERYTHING. Then of course there is multiplayer...
Multiplayer: 9/10 (I am going to exclude this score from the final verdict because this game was meant to be single player immersive experience.)
This game is only multiplayer online, but it is fun to boot. There is a free roaming world replica of the main story line's one, and you and up to 15 others can all roam it together, fighting eachother, or teaming up against others, or going solo to do your own thing, where at anytime you can run into someone and have a random gun fight. Makes for a pretty awesome multiplayer. The only reason I give it a 9, is because there is no couch co-op for this awesome free roaming business...
Final Verdict: 9.3
Should you get this game?
If you like westerns, and video games, get it. If you like 3rd person shooter action adventure games, get it. If what you read in the review sounds awesome to you and you want the full experience get it. Otherwise, don't bother. :)
I forgot to mention a gripe about the controls. Running can be finicky at times, and when you want to get out of cover, and you wind up switching back and fourth from either side of a doorway, that just makes you feel stupid. These issues are far and wide though, and the running should not be a problem for people familiar with Rockstar Games.
